What is Relax?
Relax is a customisable sound environment for quiet breaks, winding down or gentle background listening. Combine randomly generated instrument notes with background sounds and optional animations. There is no prescribed exercise or target to achieve.
Choose and mix sounds
- Choose one instrument: wind chimes, singing bowls, kalimba, handpan, bells, gong or harp. “Enable instruments” switches instrument sounds independently of the background layers.
- Sound presets offer a ready-made starting point. You can edit the mix afterwards; duration, wave direction and general preferences remain unchanged when switching presets. “Nature only”, “By the fire” and “By the sea” play without instruments.
- Rain, wind, noise, campfire and ocean surf can be enabled individually and combined. Each background layer has its own volume control. Also adjust the overall volume on your device.
Adjust the sound
- Sound density controls how often new instrument notes occur. Pitch shifts them higher or lower. Their sequence is random, and notes may repeat.
- Raindrop density, wind activity, crackle density and wave intensity change their respective background sounds. When wind and wind chimes are both enabled, new chime strikes follow the gusts. Other instruments remain independent of wind.
- Noise offers white, pink and brown sound colours, not special healing frequencies. No particular sleep or concentration benefit is promised.
- Sound selection, volumes and sound controls can also be changed during playback.
Set up animations
- Instruments, rain, wind, smoke and waves have separate animation switches. You can listen without their animations. “Gentle animation” switches movement on or off globally.
- Instrument notes create coloured shapes. Rain shows small drops, and wind expands and contracts a background circle. Gentle campfire flames flicker along the bottom edge. Smoke rises directly from them, swaying gently sideways. Fire and smoke share an animation switch.
- For ocean surf, choose waves arriving from below, above, left or right. Each wave has one soft crest at a random position. The next wave may arrive as the previous one retreats. Movement follows the surf sound.
- Animation colours follow the selected palette. Movement is initially disabled if your device prefers reduced motion.
Start, pause and end a session
- Set the duration in minutes. 0 means unlimited. A duration change applies to the next session, not the current one.
- Start with the play symbol. A safety notice appears on the first start. Sessions never start automatically.
- Pause stops sound and animation while preserving the remaining time. Use the play symbol to resume.
- The stop symbol ends the session without confirmation, with a short fade. A timed session fades gently during its final seconds.
Use sleep mode
- Sleep mode gradually fades a timed session during its last five minutes. For sessions shorter than ten minutes, fading starts halfway through. Unlimited sessions have no scheduled fade.
- During playback, use the dim-screen button to darken the display. Tap the dark view or press Escape to return to the controls.
- Screen wake lock is off in sleep mode. Sleep mode does not prevent interruptions caused by the browser, device locking or power-saving.
Focus view and screen
- Focus view gives the animation more space and attempts to enter browser fullscreen. Use the focus button to leave this view.
- In focus view, the mouse pointer disappears after brief inactivity. Movement, a click or a key press reveals it again.
- Outside sleep mode, “Keep screen awake” attempts to prevent the screen from switching off during playback. Fullscreen and wake lock are not available in every browser or on every device.
Safety guidance
Use Relax in a safe place and start at a low volume, especially with headphones. The sounds are an invitation, not a task. You can pause or end at any time. Stop playback if you experience ear pain, ringing, dizziness or discomfort.
Do not use while driving, operating machinery, swimming or bathing. Stay aware of important surrounding sounds and alarms. Relax is not medical care and does not replace treatment.
- Low volume and listening breaks help protect your hearing. The percentage is not a sound-level measurement; even a low app setting may be too loud when device volume is high.
- Stop playback if you experience ear pain, ringing, dizziness or increasing discomfort. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or recur.
- If you are sensitive to sounds or moving images, reduce volume and sound density or turn audio or animation off. Seek professional advice if unsure about suitability.
- At bedtime, preferably use quiet speakers and a timed session. Do not rely on Relax as an alarm or assume playback will continue through device locking and power-saving.
- Relax does not promise to treat sleep, stress or concentration problems. Do not replace prescribed medicines or treatments. Seek professional advice for persistent problems.
Browser and background playback
“Keep audio playing in the background” allows sound to continue when you switch tabs or apps. Without this option, the session pauses when the tab is no longer visible. Animation always stops in the background.
The background option cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback: the browser, operating system, device locking and power-saving may stop audio. Relax is therefore not a reliable alarm.
Reloading or closing the page ends the current session. It is not restored. Sounds are generated directly in your browser; no recordings are played and no microphone is used.
Local preferences and privacy
Sound choices, volumes, duration, density, display options and first-start guidance status are saved locally only with storage consent. Otherwise they stay in memory. Running sessions are not saved. Disabling storage or clearing preferences removes saved values. There is no cross-device synchronisation.
